I can see many other use case for QR-coded spine labels (or RFID tags, though I don’t know if they would be location specific enough to determine the order of a set of tags on a shelf).  From a user perspective, why not guide them from the catalog directly to the item on the shelf?  1. They find a book in the mobile catalog and click a “help me find it link” 2. GPS walk thems to the proximity of the shelf 3. They hold up an AR App, which uses a big onscreen arrow to guide them to the book.  No mess, no fuss.
